Dialect of American literature From the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, dialects were not common in American literature. In my article "dialect of American literature", we compare and contrast the three writers who use dialects in sentences and explain the difference between valid dialect and invalid dialect. The writers I discuss are Mark Twain, Brett Hart and William Dean Howells.
