The concept of development includes an essentially continuous and intermittent theory. Discontinuity theory is gradual. The learning and development process involves different stages, which are characterized by qualitative differences in behavior. Theorists who assume a discontinuity theory propose a specific start and end period for each stage. By contrast, continuous theory explains that learning and development occurs in a gradual process.
