Step-down transformer: Oil-cooled transformer that converts primary distribution voltage to secondary distribution voltage. Most of the step-down transformers are designed for single phase operation and usually require three physical transformers when three phase secondary circuits are required and can be mounted on the same pole as shown above. This space is defined by the National Electrical Safety Code to separate the supply conductors from the communication conductors. According to this specification, the highest cable in the communication space must be spaced a specified distance from the lowest power conductor in the power supply space. There are many exceptions and special cases, but the color separation shown in this figure is common.
MCB can be used in single phase and three phase circuits. In a single-phase circuit, a single MCB can be used as a hot wire, or it can be used for a bipolar MCB connected to a hot wire and a natural wire. Three-phase or quadrupole MCB is used to protect three-phase power. When the fault current flows through one pole of the MCB, all three poles will operate. Instead of specifying the breaking capacity, the standard specifies the value of the short circuit capacity. Short-circuit capacity is the predicted current expressed in terms of its r.m.s, and the MCB is designed for manufacturing (close), operating time, and disconnection under specified conditions. Typical values for rated short circuit are 5, 3, 5, 6, and 10 kA. For values between 10 kA and 25 kA inclusive, the recommended value is 20 kA.
