Dehumanization and terrorism

Most people agree that terrorism is not good. The words themselves have abundant moral implications. Certainly, some people think terrorism may be reasonable from time to time, but in general discourse terrorism is often considered to be terrible.

What is the result of calling a behavior as a terrorist act or calling a group a terrorist group? Please note that there is growing rhetoric surrounding "cyber terrorism" in relation to this problem. Many government officials now cite it as a major continuing threat (for example here and here).

A recent study by the University of Technology Michigan, Adam Feltz and Edward Cokely found that there is a wide range of impact on representing a group of people as "terrorists". Generally, participants in their research do not want much to "understand group dissatisfaction" and do not want to "negotiate with the group." In addition, participants in their study found that violence against groups described as terrorists was more acceptable and such groups were less reasonable than groups not described as terrorism.

An interesting feature of this behavioral feature is its similarity to the behavioral features associated with inhumanization.
