Definition Argument

Discussion of the definition focuses on clarifying the definition of controversial terms and concepts. In other words, the argument of the definition is to argue that the problem can not be explicitly claimed or clearly understood until the exact understanding of what these terms mean.

Creating a perfect discussion structure is similar to building a puzzle. Each piece has specific features belonging to a specific place in order to create a whole picture.

There may always be changes, but the basic overview of defining parameters is as follows.

First thing - In your introduction, there may be multiple paragraphs that summarize the details of the problem. It ends with paper that made your claim

Part II - Provides a detailed definition of important terms. This takes 1 to 2 paragraphs

Part III - Provides detailed support for your statement, with a focus on how your statement works in the definition of the term. You should propose at least three important support ideas, so this section should contain at least three paragraphs.

Part IV - Resolve the opposite view. What's the matter with your claim? Be sure to focus on the points related to the definition of the term

Part 5 - Finally, at your conclusion, summarize the main points of your paper and tie your question to the whole picture. Please clarify your audience that new findings on this issue can better understand and support your claims.

Because dictionaries provide too many definitions conveniently, it is straightforward to use them as a basis for parameters in the definition. However, this discussion is often quite weak in solving substantial controversial problems. For example, a reference dictionary can not solve arguments about what a human being is. This is because the dictionary only provides definitions of definitions that the editor considers to be correct, acceptable, or commonly used. Dictionaries usually do not use parameters to support definition - definitions are only provided rather than protected

Please do not use the definition of dictionary in your thesis. You want to show TOK Evaluation Committee that you are writing reflection articles rather than textbook definitions. Do not rely on the definition of a dictionary to prove your argument or to support an objectionable argument. This will prove that you are not involved in that topic and that you bypass the complexity of the topic and instead support the general definition. For example, you may be discussing the use of reason and imagination in art. Instead of discussing familiar artists like Picasso or familiarizing with examples of imaginative thinking like the Sistine Chapel, use creative, insightful and supportive examples. The paper should be essentially objective, but it should also be reflective and unique.
