Frank McCourt succeeded in providing a fascinating story from a child's point of view, sometimes painful, vulgar, full of humor, and dealing with his father's alcoholism. This memoir occurred between the Great Depression and World War II, but mainly Ireland, countries around the Catholic Church, high unemployment rate, extreme poverty, and Irish curse: alcohol.
