In the mid 18th century Pope Benedict XIV defined martyrdom and outlined the characteristics of martyrs. According to the Pope, the martyrs said, "believers who die for faith, especially murderers (" tyrants "... ...) are motivated by the beliefs of hatred" (Peterson, 93).
