The dawn by Octavia E. Butler is the first book of the Lilith's Brood trilogy. After the nuclear war which made the earth unable to live, most almost extinct human beings were saved by the alien race Oankali.

Oankali is very different from humans. Unlike humans, Oankali has three types of gender: male, female, and Ooloi. Because they all have tentacles in their bodies, they see the world through their different perceptions. They can cause mutations in other organisms and can make offspring from genetic material.

The name of the hero is Lilith Iyapo, who woke up 250 years after the end of the nuclear war and he found himself on an alien spaceship. At first she was tired of the difference of Oankali and I learned that their behavior is very strange. But later, Lilith formed an alliance with Ooloi called Nikanj and cooperated with Oankali to make it suitable for living the earth again. Instead, Oankali wants to intersect humans to create a hybrid Oankali / human and they believe it will benefit them and human beings. Lilith agreed, but no one agreed with her, they killed Lilith 's fellow Joseph. Humans were sent to the earth without Lilith and Lilith used the remaining Joseph DNA to accommodate the first mixed species from Nikanj.
