Culture Prevails

In Innocent Age, Wharton made an important opinion about New York society. Society plays an important role in the life of characters in novels. In Wharton's New York society, I believe that most people are responsible for complying with the rules and practices protected by their members. Wharton showed that society is hypocritical and can not confront reality. New York's old culture is spreading throughout the story's lifetime, and few people can take their lives into their hands.

Jing Mei is a rebellious child sandwiched between two cultures. Chinese culture prevalent in her mother 's house and the American who is prevalent in other countries. She refused her mother's discipline efforts and was dissatisfied with the high achievement pressure that immigrant parents usually bring to their children. She also understands that her mother is using her to win the game with her friend Lindo Jong; two women pride that their daughter is more talented . She is faithful to herself and I am determined not to participate in such competition. In the culture of honor, reputation depends on the ability to respond effectively and intensely to all forms of insult. In the culture of honor there are few authoritative authorities. In other words, all members are responsible for maintaining control over reputation. On the other hand, the value of dignity culture is essential, and therefore it is freed from falsehood of others. Insults are still considered aggressive, but it is more worthwhile that someone has the ability to shrug off and insult these insults without conflict.
