Cultural Expectations in a Selection of Texts

In all societies I know there is cultural expectation. Literature often follows the same expectations. There are many stories in this class, focusing on cultural expectations. Rip "Rip Van Winkle" in "Editha and Major Molineux" in "My Kinsman, Major Molineux", Editha and George are victims of cultural expectations. Let's start with "Rip Van Winkle". "Before Lip slept, this story actually took place in two different places, and he lived in the pre-colonial period of the United States.

The choice here reflects a wide range of readers. Students may try to judge the nature of these readers (social class, education, reading expectation) as a means of humanity by text. This also emphasizes the contrast between the literary culture embodied in these poems and the student's own literary culture, including that microcosm in English class. Students who are familiar with British knights and metaphysical poets will bring much to the discussion about these verses, especially from the viewpoint of format and style. We have read the cultural text (widely defined) to understand their influence on shaping the culture around us. In this version of the course, the theme is "Monster Literature". To this day, this theme is established through most literary history.
