At a certain level, critical reading means simply asking questions and evaluating their claims rather than just accepting what you read.

However, the type of question you ask and the type of question you prioritize in your assessment may be very different.

This can be done in a relatively "logical" way by thinking about reasoning in use, claims based on evidence, and so on. It can also be implemented in a more "political" way, taking social impact into account.

You can also ask the instructor for examples and see how the main concepts are understood. This may help to understand their expectations in writing

Critically read: Reading a research paper must be an important process. You should not think the author is always right. Instead, they are suspicious.
