Creating a Safe, Supportive Environment for Learning

Creating a safe and supportive environment for social and emotional learning (SEL) is CASEL's top priority and it is still going on. Our focus is to integrate SEL into every aspect of school and community practice through a systematic approach.

As young people experience varying degrees of stress throughout society, the learning environment becomes particularly important for educators. Due to requests from educators and guardians, the Michigan State Board of Education (SBE) took the position of last year and adopted guidelines for building a safe and supportive learning environment for LGBTQ students. Although these guidelines are neither legal nor policy, it is a starting point for schools where all children want to have a safe learning environment. Our schools provide security and privacy for all children regardless of whether the children are majority or minority. They provide employees with training on diversity and inclusion, and educate students on the differences.
