Most of the time before the war, southern leaders are pleased to coexist in a relatively harmonious relationship between the southern identity and the wider American national identity. They are content to promote the interests of the southern part of the United States, not the United States. However, some famous southern people have advanced further, claiming independence in the south outside the United States. These South-nationalists such as Robert Barnwell Rhett in South Carolina, William Lowndes Yancey in Alabama and Edmund Ruffin in Virginia state that national independence is necessary as the people in the north are hostile to the southern interests I believe that. Writer like William Gilmore Sims of South Carolina built their charm of South with their pen, and politicians advanced this argument at the political stage.
