The Unified Methodist Church (UMC) was founded in 1968 as a result of the merger of the Evangelical Unification Church (EUB) and Methodist Church. The latter church is the result of a combination of Methodist Protestant Church and Methodist Episcopal Church's northern and southern factions. As of the late 1990s, the Joint Church had about 9 million members. The number of members of the Unified Methodist Church is decreasing, but related groups in developing countries are growing rapidly. Prior to the merger that led to the establishment of the Unified Methodist Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Methodist Church cited modalism in their motherhood as a reason for leaving in 1946 and divided the method.
