Most sociologists who support this approach try not only to understand society but also to reduce social inequality. Karl Marx is always related to this method.

Social welfare in the field of welfare economics This method begins with designation of social welfare function. The choice of social welfare function is rooted in moral theory. Utilitarian social welfare function measures each person's happiness equally and Rawls's social welfare function only takes into account the welfare of the wealthiest individual. Neoclassical economic theory provides two inconsistent remarks to think about the origin of common interest, the set of two different micro foundations. There is a view that common interests are due to social benefits of cooperation. This view may appeal to prisoners' dilemmas to show how cooperation can lead to better welfare outcomes. Furthermore, cooperative equilibrium is stable in repetitive prisoner's dilemma. Under these circumstances, individuals do their best by pursuing the best way to act in society.
