Consumerism Taking Over Harlem

Before the life of Harlem was dominated by consumerism, the citizens were democratic exchanges. African-American writer and socialist Chandler Owens believes that performance of singing and dancing has brought about self-expression and liberation. He wishes that they will be integrated into Harlem's public life. However, other citizens are concerned that their community will be the center of "entertainment and benefits" (312). These citizens are worried that their community will simply be the place to make money.

The summary defining consumerism can be complicated. Consumerism is a term used to describe the effect of making personal happiness equal to the purchase of material assets and consumption (Fritz). In other words, consumptionism is based on criteria set in a particular society and the needs and needs of people who derive wealth from them. This is not surprising. We live in the era of neoliberalism and fall into a culture promoting individual-centered consumerism.
