Connecting Literacy and Popular Culture: Annotated Bibliography

Pop culture is part of the experience of children's daily life and is included in movies, news media, comics and TV programs, comics, music and advertisements (Seiter, 1999; March 2000, Ashton, 2005 Quoted in year). However, there is still a problem in handling pop culture as a medium of effective reading and writing ability in early childhood (Ashton, 2005; Shegar & Weninger, 2010; Arthur, 2001). The development of literacy learning began before children entered school from being able to practice literature in families and communities and to participate in the generation of meanings (Arthur, 2001; Ashton, 2005).

What are the main arguments for integrating mass culture into literacy education? What kind of problems does this integration bring to literacy education? Today's children are growing in the digital world, the surrounding environment is full of pop culture, teachers reconsider and respond to new teaching methods in the classroom educational culture. ) The literacy ability of the 21st century is multifaceted, Giroux considers "The culture of teaching and learning this book is no longer the main content of literacy ability" (Arthur, 2001, p.183 ).

One important way to understand the relationship between mass culture and the media is media literacy. Media literacy is a term that often appears in the context of education and has various meanings. Evaluation notes are useful for understanding topics, creating paper statements, determining if a particular source is useful for your job, and determining if there is enough valid information to complete the project .
