Conflict with Emerald Island The island of Ireland is known for its many things: St. Patrick's Day, green landscape, music, beer, and discord. The heart of this conflict began when the British came several centuries ago and Protestantly oppressed Irish Catholics. There was always hatred between Irish Protestant and Catholics. The island is divided into various regions. The Republic of Ireland consists of 26 counties forming the southern region. This area is mainly Roman Catholics.
