Remarque used comrades throughout the book and emphasized how Paul imagined that all people as a result of the war were similar and equal. Paul has many friends in his group, but his best friends are Kate, Tejiaden and Krop. In the era of good and misery these three were there for Paul. Kate is the image of the most experienced, all male father. He found out that he is very excellent in many respects. In one scene, the group was in a desolate town; they were tired and slept in an old building, but complained that they were hungry. If they know where there is food, Kay will find someone from the group of the town. The man answered "No".
