Everyone has experienced failure because art of failure is presented as an inevitable simple learning. As the poem advances, the attitude of the speaker to loss becomes increasingly serious. This poem is about human suffering. Nature is used to compare the fight between nature and human suffering. This poem consists of four different clauses. The first section consists of 14 lines, the second section contains 6 lines, the third section contains 8 lines, and the last line contains 9 lines. Rhymes are irregular. Arnold expressed his shock to the Victorian faith crisis. At the beginning of this poem, he said that everything was as calm as the other night. However, as the poem progressed, he stated how Sophocles heard the sorrow of the Aegean Sea. Arnold mentioned the "sea of faith" which actually represents the church. When referring to "the sea of faith," he reveals something quiet and ordinary looking at the surface, and the sea is singing songs of sorrow and despair. In the meantime, people raised questions about religion and started looking at Darwinism. Arnold believes now that love should replace the darkness that transcended the world.
