Columbus as an Imperialist

Columbus as an imperialist on 12th October 1492, Admiral Cologne landed on the tropical island of the Caribbean. It is quite coincidence to find this island. Initially Cologne started looking for a shorter way to China but found a new world. How can he be regarded as an imperialist if the purpose of Cologne's voyage is to find a shorter route to China, not to dominate another country (definition of imperialism)? Although he did not become an imperialist, some of his actions can be regarded as imperialism.

The question of whether Columbus is an imperialist is always controversial. There is neither a legitimate side to support nor a wrong side to support. It all depends on my opinion. He introduced many new things to the American Indians and showed courage when exploring the new land.

Many people today think that Christopher Columbus is an imperialist. The Columbus has two aspects, good and immortal. There is some evidence to support this. In "Take Sides", Kirkpatrick Sale supports Columbus as an imperialist. Robert Royal thinks that he is not an imperialist. After reading "Take Sides" my opinion for Christopher Columbus has changed. In my opinion, Columbus is an imperialist. According to Sale, he felt that Columbus had invaded the land and people he found. Columbus occupied everything on behalf of the Spanish monarchy. Sale also considers Columbus's primary purpose is to enslave local people. Some examples of European imperialism are exploitation of natural resources, religious conversion and settlement. Sale also pointed out that Columbus is about to conquer new lands and people.

According to Robert Royal, Columbus is not an imperialist. The royal family thought Columbus would behave as the king ordered. Royal also pointed out that Columbus was not moved by the arrogance and desire of Europe. He also believes that Columbus will also enjoy the money when he explores. Royale believes Columbus should be praised for his courage and quest to explore the unknown world and his willingness to promote knowledge of other parts of the world. Royal said that the only reason Columbus abducted the Indians was because he wanted Indians to speak Spanish miracles and Colombus' goodwill to others. The royal family felt that his behavior was rustic, rude and operational to him. "The moments of awe, joy, love, smile are not recorded, only anger, cruel, greed, fear, and death are recorded, this is the record."
