Color theory of photograph Color photograph starts with black and white negative. The color film consists of three emulsions, each layer is essentially the same as a black and white film, but only one third of the spectrum (red, green, or blue) is sensitive. Thus, when the film is exposed to colored light, the result is a multilayer black and white negative film. After developing the negative, the remaining undeveloped emulsion "flips" provides a positive image. The remaining emulsion is exposed (chemically or light) and developed a second time with different developers.
