College Credit for Military Experience

Do you know that you can acquire university credits with military experience? The American Board of Education (ACE), in cooperation with the Department of Defense, reviews military training and experience and recommends appropriate university units for members of the military. The ACE provides quality assurance and policy guidance for Joint Service Records (JST) used by the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard.

JST is an academically acknowledged document verifying military expert experience and service member training and corresponding ACE University credit recommendations. It is the responsibility of each agency to decide which ACE credit advice can be approved, changed, or rejected. Whether an academic institution approves a unit depends on its unit, policy, procedure, degree requirements.

By accessing the JST web site, all soldiers, officers, and refugees, including all army units, coast guards, marines, active members of the Navy and veteran officials, and evacuees can access JST. Air Force personnel should contact the CCAF to receive a copy

More than 2,300 universities regard these records as official documents of military training and experience, and the relevant ACE's credit advice.

Before starting the course, please send all official transcripts from former university and service department to the new school for evaluation. Many students waste valuable time and money on courses that many students do not need to repeat on previous courses because they registered before the martial or college transcripts were fully evaluated.

Providing credit through the exam offers another way to verify previous research or military or vocational experience through credits of non-new exams. Since the late 1960's, the University Council has provided CLEP (University Level Test) Exam. The US Department of Defense's DSST (non-traditional education supports defense activities) also assessed previous learning. CLEP and DSST are standardized high-risk multi-choice tests.
