The American Red Cross The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help people around the world to help make our world better. Since 1881, the American Red Cross supports American military families, providing disaster relief, health and safety training and services, and other endless services by blood. Clara Barton and some close colleagues founded the American Red Cross in Washington, DC. May 21, 1881. Clara Barton asked about the organization of the World Red Cross when he stayed in Europe after the end of the civil war.

In 1869 Clara Barton visited Geneva, Switzerland as a member of the International Red Cross. In 1880, the American Red Cross was founded. This is the climax of Burton's 10 year work. Until 1904 she served as the first president of the organization and continued the charitable tradition as a Cuban volunteer during the Spanish-American war.
