Clara Barton and the American Red Cross Clara Barton were born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. Clara is the youngest of the five middle-class children. She was educated at home until she was 15 years old. Clara Barton may be known for establishing the Red Cross, but there were only 2 years medical experience before the war. Clara obtained this experience by caring for her invalidity (a weak person due to injury or illness).
