A wonderful series. These stories are geographically similar - mainly in Reno, Las Vegas, and Northern California - but the story is different (first person, some are third person, some characters), the hero (male, female , Young people, older), period (gold rush to now) and theme. The first story ("Ghosts, Cowboys") is autobiography about the relationship between the author and the Manson family.
Like all our memories, we sometimes like to take it out and lay it flat on the kitchen table. Just as my wife used sewing patterns, we arranged the shapes of life as I thought. . Up to now (29)
It is not good for a person to want some of you. Sometimes love is a wound that opens and closes and opens and closes in our life. (33)
One thing I learned from excavation is that everyone's heart is full of love for destruction, depending on the location. (208)
Even in Ohio it is not uncommon for foreigners and blacks to handle this situation so cruelly. However, this seems to be a special kind of injustice within the territory. Because it is a brand new place as we have seen apart from the outcome of civilization and its ugliness. California is the official, not Eden. (216)
It is strange to say this because the boy feels that I am far away from the man I am currently. Given the darkness and difficulty of the time described here, I know that distance should be considered a blessing. But considering how far I have gone and how clever it is, it makes me very sad. I am scared, angry, almost lonely, but my life center is closer to me than ever. (236)
Even something not related to me, I am sorry about everything. Especially those. (262) ()
The first item in the book and one of my favorites is "Ghosts, Cowboys". This article is informal than the short story about the state of Nevada's history which is difficult to spell. It killed the story of the author himself. Her father, Larry Watkins, is a member of the notorious Munson family living in Spoon and Myers ranch. Watkins appeared in the execution of his Helter Skelter prophecy but did not participate in the murder, and became one of the main witnesses to Manson during the Manson trial. After the trial, Watkins got a job and got a wife, and eventually she was her daughter Claire.
My other favorite, "Degging" speaks the story of two brothers searching for money in Nevada. They will be friends with Chinese father and his son when they need additional assistance to handle their claim. This is a disappointing part of America's history, because I hate Chinese. The result of this story is very clear
The short story first introduced by Claire Vaye Watkins is true handling. Born in Death Valley and raised in the desert of Nevada, Watkins uses the beauty and emptiness of the American West as a background for every elaborate story. "Battleborn" - a nickname for Nevada during the Civil War - is a title suitable for the story of a character with a problem or a battle scar. Through calm and fragile sentences, Watkins records desperation and loneliness, records brave fighting and hopeless complaints to survive, each time rooting her weaknesses.
"Claire Vai Watkins has never been satisfied with the usual things - there is a surprise in every story of this wonderful debut - a collection of the best short stories -" a problematic writer, Christopher Cork, you came home
Claire Vaye Watkins (28) grew up in the desert of Nevada and is the daughter of Paul Watkins, former right hand of Charles Manson. Before I started reading Watkins' first short story, these were part of my understanding of her and I think that I will color my reading in some way. However, in addition to the story ("Ghosts, Cowboys"), there is a fictional story about Watkins about the father who died at the age of 6 These stories erase my preconceived thoughts.
