Chase Grimm: Applying studies to real world issues

Students at Iowa State University acquire knowledge in the classroom and produce surface sampling equipment for NASA's Micro-g NExT competition

When I grew up on a small community farm in Maynard, Iowa, Chase Grim spent hours spending more time learning more about repair and manufacturing systems for agricultural machinery and equipment.

He said that it is a simple option to participate in the industrial engineering program. "It seems to be the most widespread of all engineering disciplines and there are many managers in this field, which I can do for themselves," says Grimm.

Recently Grimm brothers and two friends submitted a proposal for the Micro-g NExT competition to NASA. This is aimed at undergraduate students to challenge the design of equipment to solve the current space exploration problem. In this contest, college students who are studying similar topics can gather and apply learning to practical problems.

Grimm said the team chose to use a surface sampling device for the asteroid, as each member has an idea on how to create a design.

He was excited when their proposal was chosen for testing at the Neutral Buoyancy Research Institute in Houston but he realized that they have now removed the difficult process. This is because the proposal was not a function design originally but a concept.

As a result, Grimm reshaped the design from scratch and made it work under certain parameters such as specific weight, volume, size, and ability to pick up 1/8 inch objects. They must also indicate all the danger of the device

"In practice the device is used in a space that may cut an astronaut's suit, so we need to mark all the sharp edges or pinch points on the device," Grimm explains.

After the design was completed, the Grimm brothers and his team brought the design to Texas, and the diver brought the equipment to a depth of 7 feet. The team also introduced the design, and Grimm highly appreciated it because he gave him the opportunity to practice his communication skills.

Although no competitors have a winner, Mr. Green said he would not be surprised to see some of the future NASA designs.

Grim wants to work in the aerospace industry someday but he also has a master's degree and finally studies his research to obtain a doctor's degree and continues his education.
