Today we honor American politicians, educators and writers Shirley Chisholm. Tizzam was born in New York and spent part of her childhood with her grandmother in Barbados. After graduating from Brooklyn University, she began her career with public service. She continues to acquire her master's degree in basic education from Columbia University. Her career path began as an education consultant for the New York City Child Welfare Committee. As representative of New York, she became the first black woman elected to the US Congress in 1968 for a term of seven years. In 1969, Tizam became a founding member of Congress Black Core Group.

When Shirley Chisholm started the presidential election campaign in 1972, she was such a first black woman and faced sexuality and race discrimination as a candidate. Gender discrimination is the biggest task of Tizam. Tizamu often said: The biggest problem between blacks and women is women. Because of this discrimination, Tisam was dismissed with extensive media coverage and only made a speech on television. Even famous feminists chose to support opponents in the primary Democratic election. In addition, Tizamu did not receive strong support from black politicians who voted Black woman as the first black candidate, while raising black political power by supporting the candidates that they believe will win.
