Carbon Sequestration in Forest Ecosystems As concerns over the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase, mitigation techniques that lower greenhouse gas levels are drawing attention as a potential remedy for climate change. Forest ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon cycle, but nevertheless there are some problems, namely how their important roles and management plans affect the possibility of carbon sequestration in forest areas is there. When judging whether forests are a viable alternative to climate change, it is necessary to consider various factors such as land use history, forest aging and potential feedback process.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol provide a variety of adaptive ecosystem services and recognize the potential role of forests in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration. These services include biodiversity conservation, slope basin protection, desertification prevention, and maintenance of environmental conservation in vulnerable coastal areas. However, the current rate of deforestation and the rate of deforestation threaten the ability of the world's forests to play these multiple roles.
