Building the Hastings Bypass

The route of Bexhill is usually very crowded as it is the only way from Hastings to Bakershill, Eastbourne, Brighton. This is causing potential problems for many other commercial groups and economic groups, such as cargo services and green peas (as the proposed location is a protected place for protected species).

75 years ago, my grandmother and great-grandmother were held at the Hastings Park livestock building, also known as the PNE exhibition hall. They were forced to live in the barn with other women and children in Japan and Canada, and they were sent to a remote camp in the eastern BC. In February 1942, the Canadian government issued an order calling for the removal of all Japanese families from the West Coast for "national security". There are over 8,000 Japanese people in Hastings Park - most of them are citizens born or naturalized in Canada

On March 16, BCSC began moving Japanese family from the Pacific coast to the livestock breed of Hasting Park in Vancouver. The facilities of Hasting Park are crude. A row of bunk beds is built in the building of women and children who were former livestock huts. Each bed has straw mats, three military blankets, and a small pillow. The pavement was laid so as to be separated only by the concrete slab of 3 weeks thickness. The toilet in the building is open sink, with only 48 shower between the two buildings (10 for men, 38 for women).
