This is the first empirical investigation of movie preference gender stereotypes and the first empirical test on the accuracy of gender stereotypes of movie preferences. We observed that people have sex stereotypes for movie preferences of male and female of various movie types. Interestingly, men and women have gender stereotypes that closely resemble male and female movie preferences. Gender stereotype on movie preferences is accurate in direction compared to male and female actual movie preferences, but size is inaccurate. In particular, the stereotypes of sex with regard to movie preferences overestimate the actual gender difference in the preferences of most types of movies we have investigated. The latter finding is of particular interest since previous studies on the accuracy of sex stereotypes have found that people generally underestimate the actual sex difference in (cognitive) ability (eg Halpern et al., 2011).

This is the first empirical study to investigate the accuracy of sex stereotypes related to movie preferences. Therefore we evaluated the favorite stereotype of male and female movies in study 1 and compared with the actual movie preferences of men and women observed in study 2. Three main findings became clear from this comparison. First, participants correctly predicted the direction of gender difference (ie, 65% of the type) in the preference of most types of movies. Secondly, participants overestimated the magnitude of gender differences in the preference of most types of movies. The predicted gender difference exceeded the actual difference, exceeding the effect size of 10 of 17 (59%) movies. Third, male and female participants made very similar predictions about male and female movie preferences (see Figure 1), so male and female stereotypes are as accurate as well.

Two independent studies investigated the gender stereotypes of the actual film preferences of 17 different movies of male and female movie tastes (Study 1) and men and women (Study 2). In survey 1, gender stereotypes of most of the types (17 out of 15) of the types surveyed were revealed (see Table 2, column 2). The survey results reflect the most popular cliches related to gender preferences of movies. Interestingly, male and female participants reported a gender stereotype very similar to movie preferences. Indeed, of the 17 types, the average score of men and women is related to r = 0.99, which is a significant correlation. In Study 2, we evaluated actual movie preferences with new male and female samples. As a first result, this survey revealed the gender-independent differences of 17 popular movies (see Table 2, rightmost column).
