The setting of the work can be made into the most powerful literary work that is used in his work by writers. The setting refers to the place or time at which the work is set. There are many possibilities in the environment. The setting of the work can be as simple as a single room, or it can be complicated like the author's or mental state of the character. Authors can use the settings to improve the theme of the work. One author is especially Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "Young Goodman Brown" in 1835. His time influenced the theme of his work.

According to scholar Jane Eberwein, the story is one of the voters who lost faith in Brown. Believing that he became a voter, Goodman Brown lost confidence after three months' marriage. A trip to his forest symbolizes Christian's "self-quest". There the doubt instantly replaces the faith. At the end of the forest experience, he lost his wife's faith, belief in salvation, and belief in human good.

A similar interpretation of the story centers around the similarities between the collapse of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the collapse of Brown and Faith.
