Brown Girl Dreaming tells my childhood story in the form of poetry. I grew up in South Carolina and New York, I always feel that every place is halfway home. Among these poems, I shared my growing understanding of the feelings of growing up to African Americans in the 1960s and 1970s and living with the remnants of Jim Crowe and the civil rights movement .

"Brown Girl Dream" is the story of my family from slavery to rebirth, Jim Crow, and the civil rights movement, and I ended up as a child in the 1970s. It is immersed not only in my family but also in American history. As African-Americans, we are given this history daily as a weapon against the story we have been removed from the world, or even worse by humor.
