Since BPD is a personality disorder, it can not be diagnosed when using the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV-TR after 18 years of age.
Personality disorder (HPD) is a personality disorder that occurs frequently in conjunction with other personality disorders, especially borderline personality disorder (BPD), narcissism, and dependent personality disorder. Because of the many overlaps in the functions of BPD and HPD, some experts think that there is a possibility that HPD is actually indistinguishable from BPD. Only a few studies examined the co-occurrence of HPD and BPD. Especially in rigorous studies, it was found that about 15% of patients with BPD also met the diagnostic criteria of HPD. In another study using community samples, approximately 10% of BPD patients met HPD criteria.

Eight BPD sample cases identified using a semistructured interview including DSM-IV-TR criteria and DIB-R (diagnostic interview with boundary revision) were taken from Nur Manzil Psychiatric Center in Lucknow, England. The sample consisted of 6 males aged 17 to 23 and 2 females. The themes and subtopics were confirmed in a detailed clinical interview for BPD patients
