Fort Sumter is an island fortress located in Port Charleston, South Carolina. Originally built in 1829, Sumter Fortress is the Coast Guard, the most prominent being the first shot of the Civil War (1861-65). In December 1860, Major Robert Anderson in the United States occupied the unfinished fort as South Carolina was separated from the Union and began to face a confrontation with the state militia. When President Abraham Lincoln announced plans to replenish the fort, the Allied Forces P.G.T. Beauregard bombed Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. After 34 hours artillery exchange, Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered to the fortress on 13th April.
