BMC Gerontological Medicine is an open access journal that publishes original peer-reviewed research papers on all aspects of health and healthcare for the elderly, including the impact of healthcare systems and policies. The journal also welcomes studies focusing on aging processes, including cells, genetic and physiological processes, and cognitive modifications.

This study was conducted by Gill Mien and Robert Grant of Kingston University in London and published in the BMC Gerontological Journal. They analyzed pet ownership and health data collected as part of an ongoing research project called Whitehall II Study. This is a long-term survey of the impact of occupational and social factors on the physical and mental health of British civil servants. Since 1984, participants have been studied about health and happiness every two years. The ninth step of the research was collected between 2007 and 2009. In addition to physical and mental health questions, Phase 9 management of the survey includes several items related to pet owners.
