Arkansas State Free State School was founded in 1863 by an area occupied by Allied forces to educate newly released slaves during the civil war and during subsequent restoration. These schools were first operated by the American Missionary Association (AMA) and Quakers, in particular the teachers of the Indiana annual friends conference. Early schools were in Pineburgh (Jefferson County), Little Rock (Plaki County), Helena (Phillips County), and there were many free slaves in all areas. The federal government immediately participated in the education of freed slaves and in 1865 the refugee committee, freedom, abandoned land (known as LDP) was responsible for the education of the former slave. AMA and Quaker's teacher began working under the supervision of this Federal agency

Below that there are several interviews with former slaves conducted by the Federal Writers Project in the late 1930s (often referred to as "WPA slave stories"). These stories allow us to easily review slavery as we fully understand the meaning of freedom. Here you can find personal memories of old slave living under the old slavery in the south, and memories of life during civil war, liberation, reconstruction. Remember that these previous slaves were very old when interviewed in the 1930s and 1940s and their dialects were "copied" by the interviewer in written transcripts ( Please see the narrative language note). According to Francis Smith Foster, the slave's story is a personal explanation of "slaves of black slaves and their slavery, slaves of their efforts to gain freedom" (Foster 3). They are retrospective statements that explain the identity of slaves and sometimes even the identity of slaves. They quickly became political acts and challenged this "special system" of exploitation and control. From the viewpoint of the simple but graphical style and the need to achieve different sensitivities, the theme they tried to express was "the characteristics of inhumane and non-ethical slavery" (3).
