For nearly 400 years, black Americans clashed between two buildings in the United States: Jefferson's commitment to the Republic and the nightmare of ethnic oppression. This article follows the emergence of black American political culture from the slave resistance movement in the 16th century and the 17th century to the civil rights movement in the second half of the 20th century.
