Biography of Ellen Ochoa

Ellen Ochoa was the first female astronaut of the Hispanic American. She fulfilled four shuttle missions

Ochoa grew up in La Mesa, California. She graduated with a degree in physics from San Diego State University in 1980. Ochoa continues research on electrical engineering at Stanford University. When she was there, Sally Ride became the first American woman to enter space. This incident aroused the interest of Ochoa as an astronaut. She got a doctorate in 1985. She then applied for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to enter the highly competitive astronaut program.

At the same time, Ochoa conducted research on optical information systems. She managed to process the image using a laser, hologram, and similar equipment. This object recognition technology is useful in robot manufacturing. There is also a precious space exploration application. She holds co-inventor patents of three optical devices. In 1990, Ochoa was included in NASA's astronaut program. She became a mission specialist. Her advanced skills in robotics have made her an important member of the NASA team.

Ochoa often goes to school and talks to students about her experience in space. She encouraged them to set big goals. "Do not be afraid of touching the stars," she said. "I believe that good education can be taken anywhere on the earth."

There is also the Ellen Ochoa STEM Academy at Ben Millam Elementary School in Pico Ribera, California in Grande Prairie, Texas. The United public school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, recently opened a new elementary school named after her. The Pasco Ochoa High School rocket logo flag of Washington State flew to the ozone at the Space Shuttle Atlantis in April 2002 for an 11-day mission. When Ochoa visited special guests in 2002, he returned the banner to the school and is still showing forever.
