There is a very interesting story in Richard Herman's biography of James Joyce. The publisher printed the first 500 Ulysses, kept a second copy of herself, wrapped her first copy beautifully, and sent the parcel to the Joyce apartment in Paris. When Joyce and his wife Nora were entertaining friends, it arrived. Joyce opened the package, recognized what it was, opened the first flip of the book, and wrote "Dear Norah, Ai Jim" on his first page and presented it to his wife. Nola caught a glimpse of the visitor, "How much would you give me?" Nola took over this 1000 page novel, "but I will not read the entire article!"
