Calico Joe debuted on the New York Times best seller list in the hard cover novel category on April 29, 2012, the week end on April 14, 2012. This book also debuted on the weekly bestseller list of the publisher in April 19. Calico Joe ranked sixth on the Today Best Sellers list on April 19th. It is ranked 3rd in the top selling list of the hard cover novel of April 15th of Wall Street Journal. According to Bob Minzesheimer of Gannett News Service, "In baseball, Calico Joe seems to be a noon's happy season where home teams gathered slowly and winning." According to Steven V. Roberts of Washington Post, the novel is "twisted and tense" and is a "sweet, simple story". Roberts states that this novel is a moral allegory. "Good can come out of evil, admitting your sins and asking for forgiveness will never be too late."
The novel was published by itself, but on June 8, 2008 it became the best selling book in USA Today, and one million copies were sold. In collaboration with the FaithWords mark (Hodder & Stoughton, UK) from Hathette Book Group USA, it was the first paperback novel seller of the New York Times bestseller list from June 2008 to the beginning of 2010. In 2009, it was awarded more than 10 million "diamond awards" by Evangelical Christian publisher. As Young explained in a telephone interview, the title of the book is a metaphor of "a house you built with your own pain". He also told the radio host talk show Drew Marshall, "The Shack is a metaphor of where you are trapped, where you are hurt, where you are injured.
