Beowulf Society

Beowulf, the earliest known manuscript of Beowulf society, was thought to be written in the 10th century, but over the past few centuries this poem seems to be called an oral tradition. In fact, the events of this poem dates back to the 6th century. However, there are only one manuscript on Beowulf, so few people know the poem and its author yet. But this verse gives us a deep insight into the culture of people who create and talk about this epic story.

Fate is the most common sign of social greatness, as Beowulf 's society is dominated by the king and nobility. It is mainly measured by investigating the legacy of young people and soldiers. The struggle between Beowulf and the Dragon and his dying words indicate his desire and effort to achieve destiny as one of the main objectives of his life. Beowulf is destined to participate in wonderful heroic behavior. Because the king knows his father, King Hrothgar thinks he is the man who is destined to become a great Danish warrior (Breeden, 4). Therefore, the fate of Beowulf will be partially influenced by the father's achievements and heritage. The song of this poet literally shows the fate of Beowulf's life and fight.

In the historical epic Beowulf, the main character Beowulf is considered a novel hero and a traditional hero in contemporary society. Begulf is the son of Tarn of Ecgtheow and Hygelac, a fearless fighter. This Beowulf 's recognition quickly made the reader recognize that Beowulf is a respected person. As the narrator said, the importance of Beowulf appeared at the beginning of the poem: "The name is known as courage, Geat leader" (Heaney 25).
