Battle of New Market

On May 15, 1864, cadet candidate VMI Corps fought as troops in the battle of the new market in Virginia. These cadets are numbered 257 and consist of 4 infantry regiments and 1 artillery regiment. Ten students were killed in battle or later died of injuries; 45 people were injured. The youngest participant is 15 years old, the oldest participant is 25 years old

On May 10, 1864, the Cadet Candidate VMI Corps was ordered to join the General Confederate General of John C. Breckenridge near Stutton, Virginia. After about 85 miles north, the army arrived in the new market on Sunday morning, May 15, 1864. The allied army of General Franz Ziegel in Bushill aimed at the federal army with a cannon and a muskete gun and made a gap in the road. It is worth noting that trainees filled this gap and made it possible for the Federal Army to reorganize the Allied forces. Breckenridge retreated to Siegel and his soldiers and forced to fight for the battlefield. Many students lost their shoes with the freshly cultivated soil and after several days of rain they turned thick soil. This part of the battlefield is called "lost battlefield".
