One of the most important advantages of baby's sign language may be social. In a recent study Elizabeth Kirk and her colleagues (2012) randomly assigned 20 mothers to supplement their speech with a symbolic gesture of baby sign language. Infant tracking from 8 months to 20 months did not show linguistic advantages compared to control group infants. For example, Meredith Rowe and her colleagues followed a group of 14 months old American babies. They discovered that the more gestures the baby uses during the 14 months, the longer the vocabulary spoken by 36 months (Rowe et al 2008). Even after adjusting socioeconomic status and other background variables, this relationship still exists.

Baby signs are different from sign language. Hearing parents use the baby's logo with children with hearing to improve communication. Sign language including ASL, BSL, ISL etc is a natural language commonly used in the hearing impaired community. Sign Language maintains its own grammar and sentence structure. As sign language is as complex as other spoken languages, babies in baby signs often use simplified signage. Teaching a baby's logo allows for greater flexibility in the form of symbols and does not require parents to learn sign language grammar. Baby signs are usually gestures or signs that are taken from the sign language community and modified for the baby to form.
