Authors: Skin Color or Talent?

Most of the books I read with a non-white protagonist are based on the question of whether they are biographies, racist stories, or past and present stories. Instead of giving themselves a sense of "us", they give the feeling of increasingly isolated "them" and "those people". Why are there no more romantic novels of colored people? Why is there no main character like James Patterson's Alex Cross?
