The zoo is a very popular attraction for adults and children. But are they really good things?
Critics in zoos will argue that animals are often closed to physical and mental suffering. Even the highest artificial environment does not match the space, diversity, and freedom the animal has on its natural habitat. This deprivation made many zoo animals nervous or mentally ill. Capturing animals in the wild can also cause great pain due to the division of families. There are things in the zoo that make animals unnatural. For example, in ocean parks it is common to force tricks on dolphins and whales. These mammals may die in the decades before the wild relatives, others try to commit suicide.
On the other hand, by linking humans and animals, zoos can advertise protection issues and stimulate people to protect animals and their habitats. Some zoos provide a safe environment for animals abused by circuses and abandoned pets. We also conduct important research on themes such as animal behavior and disease treatment methods at the zoo.
One of the most important modern functions of zoos is to support international breeding programs, especially endangered species. In the wild, some unusual species feel that it is difficult to find spouses or breeders, others are threatened by poachers, habitats, and predators. A good zoo makes it possible for these species to survive and breed in a safe environment. In addition, as the number of wild species decreases, the risk of population genetically becoming too similar increases. Breeding programs provide assurance that animals raised in zoos can be released in the wild and increase genetic diversity
However, opponents of the zoo stated that most breeding breeding programs do not release animals in the wild. The rest of the animals are sold not only in other zoos, but also in the US and South African circus and hunting ranches. Usually, these animals are familiar to humans and have few opportunities to escape.
Is the zoo good for animals? Perhaps it all depends on the management of the individual zoo, and the benefits of the zoo will undoubtedly exceed their harmful effects. However, I can understand that many believe that imprisoning animals for whatever reason is totally wrong.
Whether it is moral. In order to prevent extinction of animals raised in zoological zones and conduct research under appropriate conditions, it is good to keep animals in zoos. Advocates of PETA are thinking that breeding animals in zoos and aquariums is a bad thing, but we need to keep animals wild.
Some animal rights activists say the zoo should be a thing of the past. The zoo can not completely replace the animal's natural environment. Because they are imprisoned, many animals show neurotic behavior in the zoo. Advocates of zoos say they will educate the public as a major research center and help protect the endangered species. What do you think? There are many success stories, but most wildlife scientists believe that the SSP program is ongoing. For example, AZA Zoo played an important role in establishing a stable snare drum, an African native endangered forest antelope, through breeding breeding programs under the SSP program. Many of these artificially propagated snare drums were subsequently released in the wild and accordingly helped to reduce the declining population.
The zoo knows that they are attracting attention, and that is not very good. Many zoos are interested in meaningful reforms, other zoos are studying ways to make things look like them. Zoos are neither invariable nor inevitable, and most of the current forms are outdated. The zoo needs to evolve to adapt to a more caring ethic of our time. "POW" is my contribution to ongoing mainstream discussion on imprisonment ethics. As for other species, we lack critical thinking. We are facing them without meeting them. It is an interaction that is often described throughout the book. I am hoping that the people reading this book are becoming more and more people and that they are leading the mission to the zoo. Please revisit the audience of this book to visit the zoo and support efforts to help animals such as wildlife center, protected area, in situ preservation project.
