Aqueducts: A Great Roman Achievement

Romans are very innovative architects. The greatest and perhaps the most important engineering feat for the Romans was the construction of waterways. These waterways are used for two important purposes including water supply and spillage. Daily water for private and public toilets, fountains, etc. are diverted from nearby rivers and lakes, and wastewater from the city (mainly sewage) is transported to distant waters. These waterways later formed the technical basis of the invention and the use of artificial waterway and tap water supply.

The Aqueduct in Rome is a passage for transporting fresh water to densely populated areas. Considering the period, the waterway is a wonderful engineering skill. As water flows into the city, it is used to drink, irrigate and supply hundreds of public fountains and bathrooms.

In 1997, 300 gallons of water per person per day passed through nine canals to Rome. The Romans successfully realized the water system for supplying water to Rome. Many people including Frontinus believe that Roman water system has brought it to Roman people, so it is the best invention in the world. In the early days of Rome, the water supply came from the Tiber River. However, the Tiber is a very cloudy river, and the Roman sewer is contaminating it. In the 4th century, Roman population soared and Rome needed urgent alternative water supply. In 312 BC, the Roman Senate ordered Adir Apius Claudius to discover a new source of water for that city. Claudius assumed this mission and began building the first canal to enter Rome (Carl). Aqua Appia was completed successfully, and in the following 500 years ten water pipelines were built in Rome. Even today, you can see some beautiful arched arches.
