Ann Petry's short story "Like a Winding Table" is a story of an African-American who is angry and disappointed in his position in life. The story took place in the mid 1940s when African Americans acquired citizenship in the United States. The main character Johnson is constantly aware of his foot pain and the tension of his hands. His anger became increasingly serious when he believed that he was unjustly treated in a New York restaurant when he was faced with a white woman's "pregnancy" (111). Although Johnson caused his own downfall through his misunderstanding about his wife, work and racial discrimination, this story shows how insult and injustice got worse and the graphical nature of blind anger and domestic violence I will explain.
