Knowles is a highly influential person in adult education and a theologian advocating voluntary and informal adult education. Here we review his life and achievements and evaluate his contribution. Malcolm Shepherd Knowles (1913-1997) was a central figure in American adult education in the latter part of the 20th century. In the 1950s he was the secretary general of the American Adult Education Association. He wrote the first major report on the history of informal adult education and adult education in the United States. In addition, Malcolm Knowles attempted to develop its own conceptual foundation for adult education and learning through the concept of andrandogy, which has been widely discussed and used. He also wrote popular works on self-instruction and teamwork (with his wife Fulda).
