The purpose of this course is to introduce the history of ancient Near East society to students. The relevant geographical areas include Mesopotamia, Iran, Anatolia, Syria, Palestine, Egypt. This course highlights the diversity of civilization in these areas and focuses on written text and material culture that can be used to rebuild ancient Near East history. This course complements a similar introductory course in the history and civilization of the ancient Mediterranean. This course meets the large and small requirements of the department of ancient department of classical Mediterranean. This course is held once a year and the number of registrations is limited to 50 people.
Ancient Mesopotamia (almost equivalent to modern Iraq) was dominated by various cultures including Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians (see Ancient Middle East History). From a broad historical point of view, these cultures are sufficiently similar to fall under the general terminology of Mesopotamian culture. Therefore, the artistic tradition of these cultures can be classified as Mesopotamian art. In the world before industrialization, there are three large types of large buildings.
